UCB Pharma’s ergonomic syringe and packaging

Cimzia® landmark new packaging aims to make the lives of patients with rheumatoid arthritis a little bit easier. The friendly packaging promotes compliance and provides a positive, caring user experience.

It solves a common problem for users: simple opening of the box and removing of the devices. A curved front panel allows fingers to slide under and lift it to open the box. Three simple steps lead patients through a thoughtful and straightforward process. The tray accommodates a wide range of dexterity limitations when removing the syringe.

To help with physical access, as well as relieve anxiety about self-injection, designed this easy to open and understand package for Cimzia, a biologic medication. In conjunction with Smart Design.

OXO Good Grips

Based on the idea that design should be for everyone, at Smart Design- Dan and the team developed the OXO line of kitchen tools. Designed to accommodate an especially wide range of people – including people with arthritis and low vision.

The designs embody basic principles of biomechanics, characterized by large oval-shaped handles and (importantly) careful design of the blades and other mechanical benefits at the “far end” of the tools. OXO’s initial line was based on extensive usability studies conducted by Dan Formosa, a key member of the four-person design team. Since 1991 the OXO line has been referenced frequently as an early example of inclusive design

Smart Gauge with Ford

Some people buy hybrids and are disappointed with their mileage – they aren’t getting what they were promised.

Why? Because driving style makes a big difference.

Knowing this, Ford was recommended that they shouldn’t just think of the instrument cluster as a one-way flow of information, vehicle to driver.

The Ford SmartGauge is Ford’s first generation of LCD-based instrument panels designed to help drivers drive more efficiently.

The EPA rated the Ford Fusion Hybrid at 41 MPG city, 36 MPG highway. Journalists in test drives reported getting 50 MPG and more when guided by the SmartGauge. So does that mean, through design alone, we increased mileage by 9 miles per gallon?
